<image:caption>8K Video ｜ 8’54’’ ｜ 8000 × 3556 px 2022 4K Video, 8’54’’, 2020 Traditionally, Chinese dragons are water gods overlooking the ocean and protecting the ecology; in modern life, dragons have been misused widely as auspicious figures, or generalized as Asian cultural symbols. In the dragons’ series, Yang Yongliang tries to bring back the historical context. Five Dragons unveils the cohabitation of five dragons among a natural landscape, with their destinies unforeseen. Inspired by Southern Song master Chen Rong’s most well-known dragons, the work pays tribute to the classical dragon motif in the East Asian art history.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Dragon's Odyssey / 龙之旅</image:title>
<image:caption>©2024 Hennessy 8K Video, 3’00’ Dragon’s Odyssey is an animated video work created by New York-based artist Yang Yongliang, in commemoration of Hennessy's Lunar New Year in 2024. The artwork features traditional East Asian dragons, which transform into digital forms and re-encounter in a futuristic world of metallic waves. It’s an odyssey that connects the past to the future. As the dragons emerge from the water, they engage in a playful interaction, chasing and frolicking in turn, celebrating the joyous pleasures of companionship and fun. Their movements create a sensory dimension, causing the water to rise and fall in rhythm. Ultimately, the dragons return to the depths of the water, having experienced a journey of self-discovery on an innovative and trans-national horizon. This digital reinterpretation of classical aesthetics brings a sense of wonder and adventure to audiences worldwide, transporting them on a mythical journey that celebrates the spirit of renewal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wintery Forest in the Night</image:title>
<image:caption>In Artificial Wonderland II (2014), there are digital replicas of two Song Dynasty master paintings, namely Travelers Among Mountains and Steams (Fan Kuan) and Wintery Forest in the Snow (anonymous). Whereas ancient landscapes are often seen as being without time, Yang's interpretation of the latter work is a nocturnal image, titled Wintery Forest in the Night. The 2014 series marks a step forward in terms of digital technique--the piece is larger than ever and enriched with tremendous detail images. Also, Yang conjucted natural mountain rocks into the signature artificial landscape for the first time. Images of the mountain rocks are mostly taken in Iceland and Norway.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Landscapes - New York City / 纽约</image:title>
<image:caption>39.37" x 118.11" / 100 x 300 cm 2024 Parallel Metropolis marks a fresh start in my creative journey. Since moving to New York in 2018, I’ve embarked on a life filled with uncertainty and discovery. Over the past five years, I’ve traveled a lot between Shanghai and New York, navigating unfamiliar spaces while carrying a perspective deeply rooted in my origins. Immersed in daily interactions with the Western world, I’ve continually reflected on how these cultural collisions might reshape the context of my work. At first, I viewed this city like a tourist, until its once unfamiliar streets became familiar. Though I had always intended to make New York the foundation of my work, for a long time, I didn’t take a single photograph. An inner voice kept asking: What does this city really mean to me? Why here, and why now? It wasn’t until one day in 2023, while gazing at the architecture of Lower Manhattan from Battery Park—layered, intricate, rich in color, and imposing in its solemnity—that I was reminded of the landscapes by Northern Song Dynasty painter Fan Kuan, and the highest praise given by art historians to Chinese landscapes: Qi Yun Sheng Dong (Spirit Resonance). In that moment, I felt a profound connection that transcended time and space. The aesthetic of nature in East Asian art and the modern, technology-driven skyline seemed worlds apart, yet in that instant, they merged into one.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Landscapes - Imagined Landscape I 设 色 山 水</image:title>
<image:caption>2021 Imagined Landscape is conceived during the pandemic. When the world turned black and white during the 2020/2021 COVID lock-down, I stayed in New York re-thinking about Shanghai. The pandemic has affected everybody in the world, even though we might not be able to articulate what’s been changed in us, we’re all responding to it in one way or the other. For more than a decade, I always find peace in my own works; they are a sanctuary for me, like a hermit having their own private utopia. But as I look at them now I almost find them too heavy to go back to, so I imagined something new, something charming and delightful, with colors. This series is dedicated to a shifting world, and especially for the ones who remain hopeful moving forward.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From the New World is titled after Dvorak's Symphony No.9. The 2014 series marks a step forward in terms of digital technique—the piece is larger than ever and enriched with tremendous detail images. Also, Yang Yongliang conjuncted natural mountain rocks into the signature artificial landscape for the first time. Images of the mountain rocks are mostly taken in Iceland and Norway. In this piece he depicts a realistic but illusory new world.</image:caption>

Yang Yongliang uses images of architecture as brushstrokes; heavy mountain rocks with enriched details draw a faithful reference to Song Dynasty landscape painting. Urban development makes life in the city flourish, but it also imprisons these lives; centuries-old cultural tradition in China is profound, but it has also remained stagnant. Ancient Chinese people painted landscapes to praise the greatness of nature; Yang's works, on the other hand, lead towards a critical rethinking of contemporary reality.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In Artificial Wonderland II (2014), there are digital replicas of two Song Dynasty master paintings, namely Travelers Among Mountains and Streams (Fan Kuan) and Wintery Forest in the Snow (anonymous). Whereas ancient landscapes are often seen as being without time, Yang's interpretation of the latter work is a nocturnal image, titled Wintery Forest in the Night. The 2014 series marks a step forward in terms of digital technique--the piece is larger than ever and enriched with tremendously detailed images. Also, Yang incorporated natural mountain rocks into his signature artificial landscape for the first time. Images of the mountain rocks were mostly taken in Iceland and Norway.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Painting - Vanishing Landscape | 隐逸的风景</image:title>
<image:caption>2015 78.7" × 236.2" / 200 × 600 cm Vanishing Landscape is a painting series that began in late 2015, expanding on Yang’s early experimentation in cement painting, exploring an alternative interaction between Chinese traditional landscape and a contemporary touch. Vanishing Landscape alludes to the golden age of Chinese landscape painting, long gone since the late Yuan dynasty. The title parallels declining opportunities to practice in brush and ink for digital artists like Yang Yongliang. Though he was trained in the art of traditional Chinese ink painting since childhood, he hid his painting abilities under his skills in computer imaging.</image:caption>
